Here's to Small Blogs"......
Tuesday, September 21, 2010
I'm home today, getting caught up on housework, laundry & sewing.....& had a few minutes to post a blog as well. I am a true believer of not posting unless you have something to say.....none of this posting, just to be posting business for me.
O.K. while puttering around the house, attending to all the tasks I just mentioned, I was thinking about blogs & the particular ones that I seem to be attracted to the most. ....
And I was also comparing them to these "super blogs"..... You know the ones!...I won't say any names, but you all know exactly the kind of blogs I am referring to. Bloggers that began about the same time you did, but have now thousands of followers,....are writing books & that have almost become "blog celebrities".
Not exactly my cup of tea.
And then there is the 2nd type of super blog, where they really don't even look like a personal blog any longer, instead more like a page of advertising?...where it is difficult to actually find the current post...
O.K., I have to go back a couple years when I started writing this blog. The blogs I instantly were attracted to were ones written from kitchen tables, by everyday ladies describing the simple activities of their day. I will admit I do love a "pretty" blog....so of course the bloggers I instantly fell in love with were ones where a recipe was posted along with a gloriously beautiful loaf of bread, with a lace curtain catching the breeze in the background,.... or a post about gardening with a photo of wellies sitting next to an old screen door....
I am so very attracted to the "beauty & charm of everyday".......
So back to the "super blogs"......I guess they must be what many readers want to see, & that is certainly fine.......but for me, I will take the charming little blogs anytime. Lovely photos & sweet thoughts.......perfect for everyday ladies like me.......
So all the best to the "super blogs"....
but a heart-felt thank-you to all the small blogs for your daily inspiration that I value so very much....

Love this post. I am a simple little blog. Not that I wouldn't love more visitors and commentors, but I do my blog for me....and I am no celebrity! Just plain ole Ceekay......
Heidi you posted about what I have been thinkin since i started doing this almost a year ago now.
I'm the kitchen table kinda gal...who makes shabby vintage greeting cards...who has a service dog because of an illness imposed upon me three years ago...who loves Jesus...
So I fit all three into one blog called Things I learn from BEAR...
I started feeling that I wasn't doing something right...why weren't readers leaving any comments...should I join every swap...challenge and tag out there? After one week of trying to be super blog I was exhausted!!! This seemed to me too much like a job...what day to post this...when do i send that...follow all the digi wigi rules!!!
HOLD EVERYTHING...now I'm back to posting a card or two...showing pictures of BEAR doing something crazy...and mentioning a prayer request or two...
and that makes me happy...I make my cards for me...i do my own style...i don't have to use and advertise some special stamps or ink...and my grandkids think i'm cool :D
Sorry I got lengthy...but this is one subject that I think about a lot :D

Heidi, I agree with you 100%! I love blogs like you described, simple little blogs :)! I post with meaning not just to post. Have a great day!
I'm one of those little blogs and I do just that, I blog for me. I did receive a very wonderful surprise yesterday on my doorstep that I'll be blogging about in the next few days. I think you have a good idea what I'm talking about. Thank you so much. It's so much bigger and nicer than I ever expected! I'll be sending people your way to your etsy! The word "thank you" just doesn't seem to be good enough. I appreciate your kindness and generosity. I'll blog it soon!

I am not a fan of super blogs.
Once they start advertising, and posting give aways from this sponsor and that, I'm done! Once they start doing that, they stop posting about the things I loved them for. If I want commercials I will watch TV (Which I am also not a fan of!)
I totally agree with you. I prefer the simple blogs with heartfelt messages and simple recipes with pictures.
I don't know how the other bloggers becamse "celebrities", get 1000 comments and become "famous" but, I am happy with my little blog, written from my little town, by little ol' me...:D
Well said, Heidi!! And I loved your recent newsletter. Thank you so much!
I do not have a blog myself, but I know which ones I am the most attracted to even if I don't always post a comment.
Agreeing so much...it seems like when some of the blogs "get big", they kind of lose touch with those of us who are just looking for kindred spirits. But I suppose we have to be careful to not be jealous of their success.
I started my blog to keep up with family and it's read by family and a few friends....and I'm perfectly okay with that. :)
It was inspiration just like you expressed today that gave me the confidence to even think I *could* do my own blog.
Your thoughtful reflections on events in your life are just the down to earth kind of conversation I would like to have with a friend. And I wish you were my neighbour!

Heidi,
You are right. It seems to a lot of people that having a great number of followers is the must in the matter of blogging.
Blogging is not a race. Too many bloggers leave impersonal comments and add their name to your followers. They are just interested in having more followers to their blog... and are not really interested in yours. (I speak of me).
I do not know if you see what I mean.
For myself I cancel the followers gadget.
This thing said, I must say I like to stop by your blog even if I did not leave comments very often.
BEAUTIFUL post Heidi!! Keep it Simple - such wise words!
xoxo
Heidi, thank you for this post. I was sent over here by Helene Glehan as I wrote something in the same vein on my blog yesterday.
I so agree. I am drawn to the more personal, the simple, as you put it. I feel sadness when I see a blog I used to read become a super blog...or when it has been redesigned to accomodate tons of advertising. Sad but true, I have to leave those blogs behind.
Here's to small blogs, indeed.

Sweet Heidi.... exactly why I gave up the rat race. Well, that and the ex-wife reading my blog.... well, okay the later had more to do with it LOL
Anyway, I missed the small ones too and I'm back to reading them along with a few choice friends ;)
(((hugs)))

Heidi: I prefer the small and humble blogs myself, but I guess a blog is what it's owner wants it to be. My blog was created for myself, as a loose kind of journal, and as an opportunity to learn more about the cyberworld. Visitors are always welcome, but if I never get any comments my feelings aren't hurt! Collecting comments is not the purpose! Thank you for writing simply and honestly. Louise
Nice blog and blogroll.
love this post. So well said! Thank you. laurie
Heidi - Amen! I just started a blog and it is so simple but it's about things that I like to share with others if they are interested.
I am small....and I will keep it that way.
Thanks for sharing
Dear Heidi,
The simple blog of the simple life. We are all looking for a return to a simpler time, and your post expressed it beautifully.
Thank you for that insight.
Kit
Heidi, I so agree with you on this 100%. It's always exciting to see comments on my blog or to see a new follower added, and I enjoy maintaining my small blog. I think the stress of entertaining thousands of readers would drive me nuts!
I have loved your blog from the day I found it, and I've shared your link and newsletters with friends. Keep up the excellent work.
Hugs to you from a small blogger :)
Amen! You must have read my mind.
I think of all that advertising as distracting, ruins the beauty of the blog. And those "blogging superstars" as I call them, often have very little content.
I like the look of my blog and it's content if others don't read it or like it, that's fine. I am true to my blog.
