Aprons......
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Earlier today, my sister-in-law Terri, sent me the most charming written piece about "aprons"......Having a mother that cannot cook without an apron tied around her waist, & avid fan myself, especially of the "old-fashioned styles", I just had to re-print this piece for all of you to read & enjoy! I hope you like it as much as I did!........Your friend, Heidi XO
*The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath. Because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
*It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
*From the chicken coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
*When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
*And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.
*Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove..
*Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
*From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
*After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
*In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
*When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
*When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
*It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.
*Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool, now her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw after taking them from the freezer..
*Some people today would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.......I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron though........but love!!

Love this post. My Grandma always wore an apron. And she also had a love for sewing so she made me a couple when I was young that I still have. I have a love for all apron, vintage and new. I hope you are doing well in your new home.
Hugs,
Kathy

What a fabulous post! This reminds me of My hubby's Grandmother. Always in the kitchen making something delicious, of course with an apron tied around her waist! She just past away.
I can remember my gram wearing one all the time. I still get a smile when I see one. Kathy
I got this same email and was going to do the same post!! You beat me to it!! LOVE IT!!! Great minds think alike!
Thank you for sharing the apron story.
I love aprons.
My aunt always wore an apron,my grandmother, and my great grandmother ! This brought back lots of wonderful memories .
blessings and hugs to you !
Pure loveliness today, Heidi!!!
I love aprons! I have 2 and I would love to collect more. I gave my youngest daughter a cupcake apron this Christmas and she loved it! My Grandmother always had aprons and I loved every one of them.
I received this same email 6 months ago but never could find a picture of aprons that I liked so I'm glad you posted this :) I did have a thought though... I don't agree with the first line that kids and grandkids don't know what an apron is. there are plenty of 'young' people that know all about aprons. I guess that's the point of the letter, to let our children and grandchildren know why aprons were/are so important. Is it OK if I post this anyway?
Hugs to you my friend,
Missy

I did enjoy this SOOO much! Brought back great memories. I have a small collection of my mother's and grandmother's aprons. They hang in my laundry room and bring a smile to my face. I have to have a full apron, because I am a messy cook. Thank you so much for a lovely post. laurie

Love your blog! I agree with your comment about the "president".
So many here in my home town are really concerned about what direction he is leading this country.
How true! My Nanny (I called my sweet grandma that) always had an apron available. I still have one of her terrycloth aprons in my kitchen. I don't use it but I love it!!
